There are no movie theaters in Northern Manhattan. There should be!
In response to this physical and artistic vacancy, Inwood Art Works develops its Film Works programs to improve the quality of life in Northern Manhattan by creating artistic platforms that not only make a cultural impact, but also serves as a resource for a neighborhood with an abundant population of talented filmmakers.
The heart of Film Works is the annual Inwood Film Festival every spring, which since 2016 has been a showcase for local filmmaking talent. Dozens of short, documentary, and feature films are shown to sell-out audiences over three days every March. Through our Film Festival Filmmaker Fund, we also provide grants to local filmmakers.
Throughout the rest of the year there are also special film events including the Film Works Alfresco outdoor summer film program, which shows classic English- and Spanish-language films in beautiful outdoor settings such as Inwood Hill Park and the riverside venue, The Hudson.
Inwood Art Works Film Works programming is focused foremost on showcasing and celebrating the Inwood community through the moving image. It is dedicated to presenting independent films made in Inwood and by local area filmmakers. Yet, it is also open to exhibiting work that has cultural relevance and can be appreciated by local audiences.
To that end we also created the Inwood Film Festival Filmmaker Fund to financially support and encourage the creation of cinema in the Inwood community and support local filmmakers.
